In these three chapters, he lays out what is the keys to his way of life He lays out exactly what his followers are to be about, and these are crucial if you’re a Christ follower to understand them, and then to apply them to your life If you’re not yet a Christ follower, these are crucial for you, too, because if you’re considering Christianity, trying to, what is this faith about, if you can understand these three chapters, you will get the basics, you will also get the 411 level at the same time of what it means to be a Christian I’d invite you over the course of these few weeks to be reading these three chapters, it’s quite an easy read, reading it’s not the hard part actually the hard part is living it out, and I dare you to put this to practice in your life You may wanna read ’em a couple times, you might choose to read them every day If you’re really advanced, you might choose to memorize it No one says amen to that, so we’ll see But I encourage you, be here everyone, show up ready, prayed up, anticipating what God has something for you The other thing is, I’d invite you, bring your Bibles Open it up, we’re gonna go straight through, and you’re gonna get a chance to really understand, and I just encourage you to have your Bibles open so you can take notes, really look at it, and learn And I think if you do this, you prioritize this, I think God will shape you into someone who is part of bringing his kingdom here and now And today, we’re gonna dive in to one of the foundational teachings of this sermon, but to kind of prepare your hearts and prepare your minds for what God has to say, we want to give you just a little space to hear this once again (peaceful music) – [Narrator] And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your father, who is unseen Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words Do not be like them, for your father knows what you need before you ask him This then is how you should pray ♪ Our father ♪ ♪ Which art in heaven ♪ ♪ Hallowed by thy name ♪ ♪ Thy kingdom come ♪ ♪ Thy will be done ♪ ♪ On earth as it is in heaven ♪ ♪ Give us this day ♪

Show of hands, and you’re in church, so you gotta tell the truth, how many of you prayed this prayer over your favorite sports team at some point, please God, let the Cubs get a hit, right Show of hands, how many of you have been late at some point, and you get stopped at a stoplight, and you pray, please God, I know it’s my fault I’m late, but could you please turn all the lights to green, raise your hands, me too Very easy for us to get into praying prayers that are about help me now, I’ve got a problem I don’t think that’s what Jesus had in mind He has something far better for you, far more powerful for you And I think when we fully understand this prayer, that many of us have prayed over and over, but if we’re honest, we didn’t understand it, I think God can transform us But before he dove into the prayer, did you capture, right there in Matthew six, before he told them how to pray, he said, you gotta get a couple of things correct, there are wrong prayers, there are ways you can make mistakes when it comes to prayer He said it this way, he said, when you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray to be seen by others Then he says, and don’t keep on babbling like the pagans who think they’ll be heard for their many words He says two things that matter, your mind and your heart, your mind and your heart He says don’t be like the hypocrites who show that what they really care about in their heart is when they pray publicly, they want everyone to think well of them They’re not praying for God, they’re praying for the other people in the room, they want to impress them with their spiritual words If you’ve ever started a prayer and started saying thees and thous, this might be your problem, right? Have you ever been in someone, you’re like, boy, I don’t know who he’s praying to, but I think it sounds like he or she is praying for me Jesus says, don’t pray like that Be very clear, if you’re praying publicly, and you want to impress people, God knows that, so get your heart right You should pray with one person in mind and one alone, God almighty is the audience I’m praying to, yes Then he says, don’t be like the pagans who babble a bunch, and the idea is here, the mind is kind of mindless, you’re not thinking, you’re just repeating phrases and saying things that sometimes don’t even make sense Sometimes when we’re praying, our mind can wander And you’re in the middle of a prayer, and you’re thinking about something completely different He says, hey, real quick, set your heart first, set your mind first, before you do any of the praying, make sure you’re praying to God alone and make sure your mind and your heart are fully engaged for him, for him Then he continues, and he says this phrase, do not be like them, the pagans and the hypocrites, don’t be like them for your father in heaven knows what you need before you ever ask him Which begs the question, if God knows what I need, why should I pray, right? And that’s it See the idea, Jesus says, before you pray is understand that you’re not introducing a new idea to God,

he knows what you need You don’t have to tell him, hey God, I’ve got a problem, could you fix it? He knows this So there’s another reason, Jesus says, why we’re praying I would tell you before we dive into this, over the years of my life, I grew up in a Bible-believing church, we prayed this prayer often, I didn’t always understand the words Oftentimes, I would just repeat it mindlessly going, it’s kind of like this is just what we do, we say these words, but I didn’t know what it meant Over many, many decades, as I’ve prayed this, thought about it, learned about it, it’s transformed not just how I pray, I’ll tell you it’s transformed how I see God and how I relate to him and how I live out this faith And as we’re together, I wanna unpack this prayer for you that you may be very familiar with, but you might not know what it meant Jesus starts, and I’d like for us to say this together, if you would, he starts the prayer this way, he says, our father in heaven Our father in heaven Our father in heaven In this there’s a tension he creates just in the very first portion Our father, which he’s saying, God is near to you, God loves you, he’s present with you, he’s involved in your life The God of the universe is like a parent to you, our father In heaven, which says he is great and he’s mighty, and he sits on the throne, and he holds the world in his hand, he is both intimate and with you, and he is huge, and mighty, and great Our father in heaven Now, throughout the history of Christianity, we have struggled to hold these two realities at the same time, and you can see this in our Christian music, in hymns and things like that There were seasons of the church, even decades, where we really held the God in heaven quite well, and we would sing songs like, What a Mighty Fortress Is our God, right Then the pendulum would swing, and we would write songs like I Have a Friend in God And the reality in this first phrase is God is inviting you and I to hold both of these two things He is the God the father who is near to you, and he is mighty, and strong, and great Now my life growing up in that church, I could easily understand the God in heaven, I grasped that, I could see him on the throne What I struggled with was God the father And I, in this prayer, I started just saying, alright God, I’ve gotta understand what it means that you’re near to me, and you’re close to me, and you love me I prayed this, actually for years, God help me understand this And actually, once I became a dad, once we had our first child, our daughter, there was a point, there was one day where it was time for her nap, and I put her down in her crib, and I remember standing over her crib, and this is the photo I took that day, I stood over her crib, and I was so moved in that moment, I was like, I love this kid so much This kid hasn’t done anything for me other than cost a huge sum of money in medical bills, and really take all the sleep that I’ve had, and I love this kid Some of you are parents, you know this And it was overwhelming, and I remember I prayed a prayer for her, I prayed for her health as a kid, that she would grow up strong, I prayed for her future and her vocation, and I prayed for her husband someday, God, bless this kid And then I had this moment where I said to him, oh my gosh, God, I love this kid so much, and then it hit me, God, is it possible that you love me like I love this kid? And it occurred to me, he’s a perfect God, he loves me even greater than I do That’s why I snapped the photo Two reasons really, I said I don’t wanna forget this moment, and this is a great sermon illUstration, I gotta use this, so Some of you today need this simple reality, you need to accept this The God of the universe looks at you and what he feels is love, just as a parent loves a child, he loves you like that The Bible says that he watched over you all the days of your life, he couldn’t wait for the day that you would be born that he knit you together before you took your first breath He’s cared for you, he’s guided you, it even says he knows you so well, The Bible says, he knows the number of hairs on your head, which unfortunately is a larger number for some than others The point is, he knows you, he loves you, he cares about you, he’s the father who cares Some of you today, you just need to accept that more than anything else, just know, the God of the universe cares for me You start this prayer like that, you go, oh, my gosh, he’s intimate, loving, caring, he’s that God And he’s mighty, and he’s strong Jesus in the first few words establishes who God is, his identity, and establishes ours that we are beloved children of the most high God He continues, and he says this phrase,

let’s say it together, hallowed be your name Let’s try it again, hallowed be your name This is the most confused of all the phrases in this prayer, in my humble opinion Some of you as kids got confused and thought, maybe God’s name is Harold, you weren’t sure, maybe you misheard this The problem with this is we don’t hallow people in our day, do we, so we kind of just pass through this phrase and keep going But Jesus intentionally put it there, that this is important in our prayer life, that we hallow the name of God So you gotta ask yourself, what does it mean to hallow someone? The reality is we actually do this in our culture, we just don’t use that word anymore In fact, many times we’ll do this about when we, basically sports and other things where we declare that someone is great Let me give you an example, this is from basketball today There is a debate going on right now in the NBA and this is the question, who’s the greatest basketball player of all time? There are two leading candidates, one is LeBron James, the other is Michael Jordan Yes (audience applauds) Now we clap because we know, this really isn’t a debate, is it? Those of us in Chicago, what’s the conversation about? Only one of these two guys never lost in a Finals, right? Michael himself won three in a row, got bored with basketball, and shifted to baseball, played baseball for two years, thought, eh, I’ll go play basketball again, won three more, yes He’s the greatest of all time If you need more evidence, allow me to put in the VHS tape from the 1980s, when he competed in the dunk contest This grainy footage proves the fact as he takes off from the free-throw line, throws down a dunk, and wins the title, he’s the greatest, yes You can call him Michael, or you can call him MJ, to me he is Air Jordan, and there’s no doubt he’s the greatest basketball player of all time, can I get an amen? – [Audience] Amen – Unless you live in Cleveland, but What did I just do? I hallowed the name of Michael Jordan, and his reputation That’s what it means We do this all the time, sports, all sorts of different things We recognize someone’s greatness, and we are able to list their achievements that prove how great they are In this moment, Jesus first established that God is both father and he’s in heaven, and then he declares something, and that’s what the hallowed means, it means you declare He invites you and I in our prayers to declare the greatness of our God And so when we said that prayer growing up, hallowed be thy name, and moved forward, we missed the whole point of what Jesus was challenging us to do So can I give you an example of how to hallow the name of God, will you go with me on this? Our God is one and only, the greatest God of all He’s existed before time, and he will exist after time, as well He created creation with a single word He gave his breath to create humanity Out of humanity, he pulled us out of the darkness, and formed a people in his own name He blessed them with kings, and with priests, and with prophets who would show us the way Out of this people, he have us his son Jesus, who lived a perfect life, paid the price for sins on the cross, overcame death in the grave, and promised eternity to every single person who would follow him and accept his grace Every blessing you’ve ever had came from his hand He watches over you, he guides you, and he promises eternity He is the one and only, the true great God, yes (audience applauds) Hallowed he his name Hallowed be his name Thy kingdom come, he says Your kingdom Once you establish he’s a good father near to you, great and on the throne, mighty in everything he’s done, then you acknowledge, God, your kingdom come, your will be done Notice real quick, personal pronouns in this whole prayer Not once does the term, my, occur in the prayer If your prayer life has frequently the phrase, my, you’re praying wrong This one says, God, my life is to be about your kingdom and your will being known here on this Earth, your kingdom, your will, not mine It’s your agenda, God, it’s not my agenda Your agenda’s what I want Oftentimes, when I talk about kingdoms, you go, boy, we don’t live in a world of kingdoms anymore, so what would a kingdom mean for us? I just define it as this, the kingdom, your kingdom is everything you influence, control, or own And in this prayer, what you’re saying is everything I have, all that I own, control, and influence, God, I submit it at your feet It’s not my kingdom anymore, it’s yours God, your kingdom, your will, that’s what I want In this you submit, and you go, okay, what do I own?

God, you blessed me with a house, how could your house be used for God’s purposes in the world? To welcome people in, to help others, how could your house do that? Some of you own a business, and maybe you’ve never thought about this, how could your business help to be about God’s kingdom here on earth to bring that about? Some of you need to rethink about your time, your schedule What hours of the day have you devoted for the purposes of God’s kingdom, or have you surrendered all of them and said, God, this whole thing, all the time I have is yours? God, how would you use this? Maybe your words Maybe you go, God, in this prayer I give you my words, and from here on, I want my words to build your kingdom, to bless others, to help others Your social media account, right God, redeem my social media account, might it bring your kingdom and not mine In this moment, you’re pledging yourself to God’s kingdom This is why we named this series, Your Kingdom Come The idea is Jesus was constantly saying, constantly teaching, that his kingdom wasn’t just something in heaven, it was available and happening right now Jesus’s kingdom is built with every single person who gives their heart and their lives and says, I wanna be one of your kingdom makers and builders right here His kingdom expands when you gave your life to him, said it’s not about my agenda, it’s about yours These weeks, we want to devote our time to this, to really understand how do we be about God’s kingdom business right now, his will be known here on earth And then there’s that submission, God, not mine but yours Your kingdom come, your will be done, where, on Earth as it is in Heaven This was one of the big, big changes in my life, this phrase, on Earth as it is in Heaven That bible-believing church that I grew up in, the thought I had when it came to this life was that, this world’s a mess, lots of sin, lots of brokenness, no hope The hope was heaven So the job of the Christian was to usher as many people into heaven as we could, not spend a lot of time here on earth, ’cause what point is it, let’s just get people to heaven And then there was a day this phrase, praying it, it just hit me, on earth as it is in heaven And I realized God wants the ways of heaven, not to be for the future, he wants them here now He wants the earth, our lives, to more and more reflect heaven’s realities every single day His hope is that we would be experiencing heaven now, his will, his kingdom, here today, yes? That’s what God wants Now, to do that, what’s the primary mechanism God used for heaven to be unleashed here on earth? Do you know what it is? It’s you God loves to take a human being, who opens their heart and their life, and says, God, your kingdom come, your will be done, and then he uses that person to help this world reflect a little more of heaven’s love and grace Now in this, there’s a couple phrases I always use And they’re phrases, some of the times, to point out when I think a little bit of heaven’s being seen here, and other times where I go, heaven needs to show up here, and the two phrases are this One is when I go, that’s not right You see something, you go, that’s not right It’s not the way the world is supposed to be It’s certainly not what heaven wants for this world, you’ve said that You’ve had things you saw in this world, you go, that isn’t right Issues of injustice or poverty, just things that are wrong And there are other times where something beautiful happens, and I see something, go, aw, that’s the way it was supposed to be Earth’s looking a little more like heaven just in this moment Can I give you an example of this? A few years ago, I got invited to tour a maximum-security prison, and the gospel was having its way in this prison, it’s pretty beautiful Christianity was thriving, people were coming to faith, and the chaplain invited me to just get a tour and kind of see and encourage some of the men there It’s maximum security, every prisoner I met was in for life, no parole And I got to take a tour, and while I was walking through we visited the hospital wing of the prison And I met this huge guy, he’s a really intimidating guy, probably six-four, 250 pounds, solid muscle The chaplain said you gotta hear his story And so I just asked him, what’s the deal? And he told me why he was in prison But then a smile came to his face, because I asked him what he did And he said, well, two things He goes, my job here is I’ve always worked in the laundry, but my calling is something different And he told me he came to faith just recently at that prison, a couple years before this, and once he came to faith, the man who led him to faith pointed to him and said, now your job is to figure out what your role is here on this earth,

God has a plan for you, figure it out, and then do that to the best of your abilities And he said, there’s a day he was picking up the laundry and he wandered into the hospital wing And he discovered there were a few rooms set aside for the prisoners who were dying They had weeks or days to live And he said, something struck him, every one of the prisoners were there by themselves, no one was there with them, family wasn’t visiting, no one And he asked about it, and the doctors told him, the prisoners here, they die alone None of the other prisoners want to visit them, family doesn’t show up, they’ll just die by themselves in that room And that prisoner said, that’s not right And something gripped his heart, and he went to the chaplain, and he said, what can we do about this? The chaplain said, well, there’s this great program called hospice, maybe you’re the one who should start a hospice program, and so he did And it was his volunteer hours, and he got a whole bunch of other inmates to join in the hospice program, and they just set as their goal, that when patients realize they’re towards the end of their life, they would not be alone 24-seven that whole way through And he’d get all these guys who would just sit, and I said, what’s it like? And he said, I just sit next to ’em, and I hold their hand, and I read scripture to ’em, and I sing hymns over them And he said, eventually, he said he realized, again he’s in the laundry business, right, and so he said, the laundry here is these flimsy, little blankets, and I thought, that’s not right So he recruited a whole bunch of other prisoners to sew blankets, soft blankets, he said there’s something that just comforts you when you don’t feel well about a blanket The image of all these max-security prisoners sewing blankets was just something And then he said this, he said, Pastor, you wouldn’t believe this, he goes, my whole life I felt like I’m on the earth to do something but I could never figure it out I’d never known what my purpose was He goes, I’ve made all sorts of mistakes, that’s why I’m here, but he said, who would’ve thought that in prison is the place I’d find Christ, and in prison was the place I found the reason I’m put on this planet is to care for these men as they’re dying He goes, I’ve never felt more joy in my life than to know I’ve got a purpose for God And I went, that’s the way it’s supposed to be, right The way it’s supposed to be People could find faith They live out lives of compassion They help one another, they find purpose, that’s the way it’s supposed to be I wanna have a vulnerable conversation with you on this for just one minute And it’s around something that I would say is not the way it’s supposed to be yet And I want to take something out of the political realm that I don’t want it to be politicized this morning When I was in college, I went to a state college, a public university, and part of a Christian ministry that when I was a freshman, we had about 60 kids who were part of that, but God did a great work, and by the time we were done, 500 kids were coming and we had started a church on campus We were the largest organization on campus, which was just awesome But we felt a responsibility as so many kids were there, we thought we have to be making a difference in our campus in different ways And our senior year, my senior year at least, something happened that shook me We had a string of violent attacks on women at our school And there was clearly a serial attacker that frightened the entire university And again, that group of Christians said we have to do something So we fumbled our way through trying to figure out how do we help this campus feel safe, how do we provide someone to walk with women to make sure they could get from the library to their dorm rooms or whatever, just how do we help? We tried, we tried And eventually the person was caught, and was tried, and convicted A sense of peace returned to the campus, got back to normal is the phrase we’d use A few years later, I was on staff here in our 20-somethings, and we were doing a sermon, we were doing a talk on issues of abuse And I got into studying the research on it, and I was shocked when I discovered the statistics said then, I believe, 25% of women had been a victim And I couldn’t believe this, ’cause up to my entire life, up to that time, the only stories of this I had heard were those few women in college I took it to my wife, and I said, is this possible? ‘Cause I said, I was a pastor then, I’ve been a leader, I’ve got so many friends, I’ve never heard this And my wife said, Steve, I think that’s probably accurate And I said, how could it be? And she said, Steve, there’s so much guilt, and shame, and fear that these stories just aren’t shared And I thought, that’s not right Not that they’re not sharing the stories, but that this happens And it’s still not right And I don’t know what this means for our church, again, I wanna pull this out of a political conversation

and bring it in to humanity to say for our moms, and our daughters, and for our sisters, and our aunts, and our neighbors, and our friends, we have to have a broader conversation about what it means to protect women in our society We have to have that conversation And my hope is that the church leads the way (audience applauds) That the church stands up and says, this does not reflect heaven’s desires or God’s will God’s desire is for every person to be safe, to be protected, to have the freedom to grow up without fear and live their lives, yes? And Christians, we gotta go, how do we help in this? And I don’t have a program, I don’t have an idea What I’m just introducing to you is this is one of the many things that I look at our world, and I go, it’s not right And we gotta do something Thy kingdom come, God, thy will be done right now on earth as it is heaven Jesus continues the prayer, and he says, give us this day our daily bread And here’s what’s amazing is Jesus has talked about these big things before, that the God of heaven who’s amazing, that his kingdom would come here, right here on earth, and then he flips it to the smallest of things, and says, give us this day our daily bread Translation, God cares not just about the big things in our world, he cares about the little, tiny needs that you and I have, the little things A few weeks back, I talked to a friend, and he was going in for a minor surgery And I said to him, hey, would you like me to pray for you? And he said, Pastor, no, God’s got enough on his plate, and besides, I gotta save my prayer requests for the big ones, this is just a little surgery And I said, I think you got a couple things wrong there, right First off, God doesn’t have a plate God exists outside of time, so his to-do list isn’t full, the phone isn’t ringing off the hook, he hears every single one of your prayers, and he wants to, and second, God’s not the genie that grants three wishes, right So I think he just fundamentally misunderstood this God cares about your every single need, every one of them He wants to hear from you about all of them, not just the big ones, to invite him in, and go, boy, this is how I’m feeling today, this is what I’m struggling with today, this is the challenge I have in front of me, this is my need, and here’s what’s happening The minute you lay all those requests out, when they’re answered, you recognize it came from the hand of God, and you give him credit When you don’t pray those, you don’t always see his blessings My conviction is that God has blessed you and I thousands and thousands of times that we were unaware of, and we chalked it up to luck, or chance, or good will, or our good effort And we had no idea that God was blessing us beyond blessing The minute you pray this, God, would you provide for these little things or big things? And then you see it happen, you go, my gosh, you did it Now notice one other thing, he doesn’t say, give me this day my bread, it’s our As Christians then, once we have been fed, and once we’ve got enough, our concern is then to turn to our brothers and sisters and our neighbors to go, does everybody here have enough bread? Tangible, tangible expressions of the love of God It’s why I leave our seed packing events with Celebration of Hope, where we say to our neighbors in other parts of the world, we want to help provide bread from the hand of God That’s why I love our Care Center, where we say to our neighbors closer to home, if you don’t have enough, we want to give and share out of what God’s blessed us with, because his concern is that everyone has their daily bread, yes It’s why we give this way to others, to represent God to them and answer those prayers, give us our this day our daily bread And then he continues, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us Trespasses, different translations, some say debts, as we forgive our debtors, some say sins, as we forgive those who sin against us What’s clear in all of ’em, you and I make mistakes Yes? That was not nearly resounding enough You have made mistakes, so have I, we make mistakes And we’re in need, thus, of forgiveness And here’s the truth, God loves to forgive Richard Foster says this so well, he says God loves to forgive, it’s the one thing he yearns to do, aches to do, rushes to do At the very heart of the universe is God’s desire to give, and to what, forgive Some of you have things in your past that you struggle to feel God’s forgiveness Don’t miss this One of God’s very parts of his nature is to forgive Don’t miss this, what Christ did on the cross paid the price for every sin, it’s forgiven You lift it from God, I so struggle to feel forgiven and receive his forgiveness, just go, it’s done, you’re forgiven

And now, once you’ve received his forgiveness, guess what your job is? To forgive others Basically, God’s nature is to forgive, and once you and I have turned our hearts over to him, he wants us to become those who forgive Now this is a very complicated topic, and we’re gonna deal with it in a couple weeks in greater detail, but understand this when you pray this, there’s one side where you go, God, I need forgiveness, there’s another side where you go, God, would you help me to forgive And Jesus was crystal clear on this, they’re tied together Some of you struggle to forgive others, and the best thing you can do is get a greater understanding of all that you’ve been forgiven, all of ’em Just make a list, what are all the sins I’ve done, just start keeping a list, and you go, boy, look at the list Some of you have the phrase in your mind, I’m not that bad Take a moment to reflect, you go, boy, I’m worse than I thought Makes it a little easier to forgive when you realize God has lavished forgiveness on us Forgive as we’re going to forgive others, God, that’s the prayer And then one more, he says and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One Two aspects, lead us not into temptation, recognizes the fact that there is evil, and the potential for evil, inside of us We have the potential to do terrible things that hurts others, and hurts ourselves It says, please God, don’t lead me down a path that’s gonna bring that dark side out, would you lead me on the straight and narrow, would you lead me on a path that brings out my best, not the worst, would you protect me from the temptations that I’m susceptible to God, would you protect me In this is a decision, as well, that I’m intentionally choosing to steer my own path away from those temptations If you go down a temptation path, understand that’s your choice, you made a poor choice Some of the wisest people I know are so aware of their temptations, the things they fall to, they go, I’m not gonna go down anywhere near that path, I’m staying on the straight and narrow And you pray that for, please God, keep me from the things that bring out my worst, that’s in me, protect me from myself And then there’s one that’s outside of me And specifically in Matthew, it says, protect us from the evil one Oftentimes, this prayer, we just say, protect us from evil, that’s not the phrase Jesus said He declared that there was an evil one whose desire is to harm you and to bring your worst Later in the New Testament, they gave an analogy for this, and the image was the evil one is like a lion who’s prowling about you, and looking to devour you That’s the danger of this world And Jesus says, in this moment, you pray for protection, God, protect me from what’s inside me, protect me from what’s outside me, and not just me, but God, protect my children, protect our family, protect our church, protect our world, both from the evil that’s inside of us, and protect us from the evil that’s outside of us God, protect us, protect us Now here’s the interesting thing In the prayers we’ve recited publicly, then it goes into a nice conclusion For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever, amen That’s really nice, and it’s nice to do it publicly so you know it’s done If you’re opening your Bible to Matthew six, you’ll see, though, that that’s not in there In fact, the prayer ends exactly where it did, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, and that’s it And you go, boy, Jesus, I think you forgot something, you’re supposed to say in my name, amen, right? At least give me some kind of conclusion And I think the idea is this prayer when Jesus gave it, it’s kind of like a model for your personal prayer, and your personal prayer is not meant to be like a phone call where you say to God, hey God, that’s great, that’s enough, hang up, click, right Conversation’s over, God I think his idea is that when you pray, when you open yourself up, and you’re transformed, the idea is this conversation doesn’t end You invite the living God, maker of heaven and earth, father to you, you invite him to go with you through your day, to shape you and to use you as you’re about his kingdom business And you don’t hang up the phone on that God That God you say, you be with me, you speak to me, continue to listen to me, we’ve got an ongoing conversation throughout this day, yes (audience applauds) That’s what Jesus taught us about prayer If you’ve got an anemic prayer life, Jesus wants to expand it If your prayer life hasn’t had the power that Jesus described, boy, start using this as kind of a format, just go our father in heaven, let’s talk about that a bit, you go through it But you start to pray this prayer understanding what it means, it transforms you, it’s transformed me, changes you, changes how you view your day, changes how you view your interactions, changes how you view your time, changes how you view everything in your life, and you go, I want your kingdom to come right here, right now, and if you can use me, God, do that You see all his blessings, just sit down at a meal,

you go, man, God, you’ve provided a feast once again God, would you provide this feast for others, too, and if I can help, God, you do that But you invite him in to be the God who walks with you, guides you, protects you He transformed you, yes? Yes? Now here’s my challenge This is just week one Start praying this prayer, start reading these three chapters, start trying to live this out as best you can If you’re in a small group, start talking about this, what does it mean to be understanding living out the sermon on the mount? You understand these three chapters and you will get the foundation of all of Jesus’s teachings So be with us, join us, get the most out of this, ’cause I think God has a great thing for our church What I’d love to do is I’d love to invite you to stand as we close, and I want to say a prayer over you And I want to use this as a structure to pray for you, and pray for your family, and pray for our church So would you pray with me So father, so father, our father, God, I still can’t believe how immense your love is for each of us But I’m grateful God, for those who don’t yet know you as father, God, would you guide their steps to understand your reality Would you show up in their life in a tangible way that they really can’t explain other than there is a God God, would you convince every person in here that they’re your beloved child, and you adore them Father in heaven, God, you are mighty and you’re strong, you are great and you’re powerful, we hallow your name, God, as the great God, who’s been with us for all time, who exists outside of time, who holds all the power in his hands God, you’ve given us every blessing, you’ve heard every prayer, you are the great God who both saved us for today and promises eternity God, you are the true God and we love you, hallowed be your name God, your kingdom come, your will be done God, would your agenda be known right here on earth as it is in heaven God, in this we submit to you, we submit to you, our will, our agenda, all our stuff God, whatever we have that you’ve blessed us with, God, use it for your purposes God, would you point out the things in this world that you can’t stand, that you want to change Give us the courage to do something about it, the wisdom to do the right things God, may heaven be known in our day right here Unleash all that you desire right now On earth, God, as it is in heaven, let your kingdom come, we invite it Your kingdom, your will, and our day God, would you provide us our daily needs, bread, God, little things and big God, in this room some people have some big things going on in their lives, they need jobs, some people need healing, some people need your help in a marriage God, some people need little things, help on a test God, hear every prayer here God, show up in tangible ways that are unmistakable that it’s a blessing from you, and may we be a people who recognize every blessing, thank you for every blessing, give you credit for every blessing God, thank you God, forgive us God, we need forgiveness We are so far from your standard in so many ways God, forgive me, forgive us And God, help us to be a people known to forgive others Give us, God, the grace to forgive others, give us the capacity to forgive others Let us be known as a forgiving people and a forgiving church, God, forgive us as we forgive others And God, lead us not into temptation God, I know how many things are temptations to me, I know so many are temptations, God, guide us down the right path, keep us from the wrong path, give us the tenacity to stay on your straight and narrow way God, lead us not into temptation, deliver us from the evil one God, we recognize there is evil in this world, protect us, as individuals, as families, as a church, protect us, God, from the schemes of the evil one, protect us God, we love you We are in awe of you We’re in awe of you Now God, have your way in us as a church Shape our hearts and our lives, shape our minds to know who you are and what you want Use us in this world, God We’re following you, we’re looking to you

Please God, do what you want in this church In the name of Christ we pray this, and all God’s people said, amen, amen, amen (audience applauds) If you could use more prayer, the prayer room’s open If you want to get more involved in the church, Starting Place is that way Thanks for being here, have a wonderful week, we’ll see you back next weekend, blessings everybody (peaceful music)
