peace on earth christ is glory to the new born a king in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries lord jesus you are mighty god and prince of peace lord have mercy lord jesus you are son of god and son of mary christ have mercy lord jesus your word made flesh and splendor of the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray oh god we’re pleased to give us the shining example of the holy family graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life in the bonds of charity and so in the joy of your house delight one day in eternal rewards through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of genesis the lord came to abram in a vision saying fear not abram i am your shield i will make your reward very great but abram said o lord god what good will your gifts be me if i keep on being childless and if i have as my heir the steward of my house eleazar abram continued see you had given me no offspring and so one of my servants will be my heir then the lord came to him no that one shall not be your heir your own issue shall be your heir the lord took abram outside and said look up at the sky and count the stars if you can just so he said shall your descendants be abram put his faith in the lord who credited it to him as an act of righteousness the lord took note of sarah as he had said he would he did for her as he had promised sarah became pregnant

and bore abraham a son in his old age at the set time that god had stated abraham gave the name isaac to the son of his whom sarah bore him the word of the lord blessed are those who fear blessed are you who fear the lord who walk in his wings for you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork blessed shall you be blessed are those a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters by faith abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance he went out not knowing where he was to go by faith he received power to generate even though he was passed to the normal age and sarah herself was sterile for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy so it was that there came forth from one man himself as good as dead descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore by faith abraham when put to the test offered up isaac and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son of whom it was said through isaac descendants shall bear your name he reasoned that god was able to raise even from the dead and he received isaac back as a symbol the word of the lord in the past god spoke to our ancestors through the prophets in these last days he has spoken to us through the sun the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke when the days were completed for their purification according to the law of moses they took him up to jerusalem to present him to the lord when they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the lord they returned to galilee to their own town of nazareth the child grew and became strong filled with wisdom and the favor of god was upon him the gospel of the lord jesus christ

like medicine to heal a sickness a remedy must be inserted somewhere to begin to spread health and bear fruit healing has to start somewhere so today this is the joy of the great feast of the holy family the god who is all-powerful came down from heaven to earth to begin the process of salvation to heal his people of sin and death and where did this great healing project begin where did jesus enter into the world he entered into the world through a family today we celebrate the great feast of the holy family the savior chose to begin the work of redemption and salvation in the most beautiful location a family for almost 30 years the son of god lived with mary and joseph having meals together working together around the house doing the daily projects every family does tending to neighbors visiting friends and relatives going to synagogue services welcoming visitors it is amazing to think that for 30 years the son of god lived joyfully and faithfully in a family just like you and i today it’s very easy sometimes during the christmas season to look at a nativity scene whether it be in our homes or in our parishes or even on christmas cards and see that beautiful christmas image in bethlehem and to think life must have been perfect but it was not always perfect for the holy family and we celebrate that too the holy family lived almost homeless in a cave and a stable in bethlehem because there was no place to stay that when they fled into egypt they did so as refugees and lived for quite some time away from family and friends joseph would have been unemployed at this time far away from the carpenter shop back home in nazareth there they lived in a very simple way today we celebrate the holy family lived like every family with good times and bad but yet the joy was there for they realized they lived god’s plan mary and joseph living the beautiful vocation of marriage jesus making the family and so it is today all families look to the holy family with great encouragement asking their intercession that our families here may follow their example faith and hope and love perseverance and generosity that every family can see in bethlehem a glimpse of their own family the family together in prayer and joy as we continue this beautiful christmas season may we do so always mindful that these mysteries help all of us and every family on our journey towards heaven amen i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and his seat at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds in the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come
